Hale (long-standing editor of Godey’s Ladies Book, journalist, and conduct author). Tonkovich argues that Hale paradoxically reinscribed the terms of gendered marginalization for herself and for the women she was attempting to instruct in acceptable rhetorical practices because Hale’s authority as an author was based on her role as an interpreter of cultural conventions that sought to stabilize class and gender. Across Hale’s polemics about language use, Tonkovich reads the playing out of American middle-class anxiety about protecting the status quo through language conventions.
O’Connor elaborates on the mentality of “let you women be silent in churches” that characterized antebellum attitudes toward women speaking in public by observing that one of the deepest objections against women orators appeared to be the belief that when women strayed from their proper sphere, their moral character became suspect and their words untrustworthy: So long as woman confined her efforts for reform to attendance at prayer meetings and at sewing circles, and to contributions of money, her activities were not subject to criticism.
