Page xi Acknowledgments Although the author must assume responsibility for whatever appears in a printed work, it does not necessarily follow that he did the work alone. So important are the institutions and persons who aided me in the process of creating the finished product that it would be fair to say, whatever its quality, it would have been a poorer work without that aid. Even though I retired from the University of Oklahoma during the course of working on the book, I cannot forget either that institution or those friends and colleagues who aided me.
