There Lacan explains things as follows. First, there is the narcissism that constitutes the ego, and this identification with the body image allows for the fact that organisms are attracted to images of objects of the same species (the ‘immanent images’): First of all, there is, in fact, a narcissism connected with the corporeal image. This image is identical for the entirety of the subject’s mechanisms and gives his Umwelt its form, in as much as he is man and not horse. It makes up the unity of the subject .

However, these identifications with others also dismantle the autonomy of the ego. This leads to the seemingly paradoxical situation that ‘I is another’ (a quote Lacan uses from the poet Rimbaud; Lacan 2006: 96). It is this process that also causes the ego to be ‘frustration in its essence. Not frustration of a desire of the subject, but frustration by an object in which his desire is alienated’ (Lacan 1968: 11). As Lacan puts forward in his text on ‘Aggressivity in Psychoanalysis’, it is this objectification of the ego that accounts for a fundamental aggressivity: it leads to an aggressive rivalry with the image (the other) that the ego has turned itself into.

The question is how to apply a concept correctly to an empirical appearance. For Kant, this application occurs according to certain schemes that mediate empirical reality and the intellectual concept. A correct use of concepts requires some sort of ‘intermediaries’ that connect (‘interface’) empirical reality and concepts, the sensible and the intellectual domain. 8 The scheme is a rule according to which the imagination synthesizes intuitions (‘Anschauungen’) and thus ‘prepares’ them for understanding.
